On 23 February 2022, Mandeni Local Municipality hosted its annual Matric Excellence Awards in honour of Schools, Teachers and Students who excelled during their 2021 Matric examinations. The event was held at Sibusisiwe Hall, in attendance were various sectors which assist within the education sphere such as extra classes institutions.
The biggest winners of the day were Isinyabusi High School, who obtained a 100% pass rate, in the Students’ category, Lindokuhle Mbonambi of Tugela Secondary School became the class of 2021 Highest Achiever. Other awards included the Special Mayoral Award, which was handed to the Best Performing School (Isinyabusi High), Most Improved School (Tshana High School) and Ethel Mthiyane School for their continued support to the disabled students of Mandeni and surrounding areas.
Speaking at this ceremony, His Worship the Mayor, Cllr. Thabani Mdlalose urged the students to continue striving for excellence beyond their schooling years.
“This is the beginning of even greater things, we hope that wherever life takes you from today, may you always continue doing the things that put you in a position to be honoured today. I hope that you will always work hard to ensure all your dreams come true” said Mdlalose.
The mayor further lauded the teachers for their sacrifice and dedication in honing the future leaders of Mandeni and the country as a whole.
“Being a teacher means that you get first-hand experience of what young people ought to be when they grow up, you get an opportunity to help shape them towards the right direction. More often than not, you sacrifice family time and spend your weekends at school, today we are saying ‘thank you’, this goes to even those who are not present here today, we recognize and appreciate you”

- Nkwenkwezi High School – 86.5%
- Somshoko High School – 84.2%
- Impoqabulungu High School – 75.4%

Furthermore, teachers who produced a 100% pass rate for their subjects were also awarded for their sterling work.
