22 November 2021 – Mandeni Local Municipality Council elected Cllr. Thabani Mdlalose as the Mayor during an inaugural council meeting which sat at Sibusisiwe Hall, Mandeni on 22 November 2021. Mdlalose retained a position he has held since 12 September 2019, Cllr. Bhekithemba Magwaza and Cllr. Phindile Sishi were elected as Deputy Mayor and Council Speaker respectively. Magwaza is the former speaker of the council while Sishi served as a Deputy Mayor in the previous term of office.

The process of electing the new leadership was conducted in the presence of representatives from various government sectors and the public to ensure all processes were adhered to.

In his inaugural speech, Mdlalose urged all councillors to use the opportunity offered to them to serve the public, with intergrity and dedication.

“The people of Mandeni trust us enough to put us in the position we are in, let’s join forces, work together to fast track service delivery, in all parts of Mandeni. We need to service our people without looking at who they or which part of Mandeni they reside in, because we have taken the oath to serve them all”

Mdlalose also highlighted the need to ensure that everyone in Mandeni is included in ensuring the growth, wellbeing and sustainability of our area. The Mayor further called for cohesion in working relations among the different political parties that make up the Mandeni council.

“We have a duty to ensure that nobody feels left out, everyone must feel that they have a government that is willing to work for them. The same spirit we had during the campaigns is the same spirit that we should go out with to serve our people. Hunger and suffering do not know political parties, we should serve everyone regardless of their political affiliations”

The sitting was a success, it was capped off by the election Council Chief Whip and Mandeni council representatives in the iLembe District Municipality.
