Mandeni Youth March Against Substance Abuse

Mandeni Municipality in partnership with the Department of Social Development held a protest march to create awareness for drug and substance abuse from the Sundumbili plaza to the Sibusisiwe hall on Wednesday, 21 June 2017.

Mandeni Municipality Speaker Cllr Makhosazana Zungu urged the youth within the iLembe community to be vigilant and active in the fight against the substance abuse and crime. “This is a great day for us within the iLembe district, as we are creating awareness for the scourge of drug abuse that is widespread in our youth, this is not a problem only in Mandeni but throughout the country,” said Speaker Zungu.

The iLembe District Municipality’s Social Development Department Manager, Mrs Sibongile Nkosi-Sikhakhane applauded the youth of Mandeni for taking action and fighting against the scourge of drug abuse in their communities. “It is one of our goals to fight the scourge of drug abuse in our communities, with the assistance of the youth,” said Manager Nkosi-Sikhakhane. She further said the department seeks a solution to move forward in fighting substance abuse in all communities of Mandeni.

Similar awareness campaign held in Durban to continue the fight against alcohol and drugs. Rehabilitated addicts attended the march to raise awareness and warn the youth about the dangers of substance abuse. The iLembe district Deputy Mayor Cllr Dolly Shandu, Mandeni ward Cllrs, Inspector T Madondo from the Department of Education, SAPS, SANCA, KZN Liquor authority, and NYDA attended the youth march.
